David Pettigrew sheds light on the communities of Lochar, Crofthead, Gilmourton, Dungavel, Drumclog, Caldermill, Chapelton, Glassford and Sandford, and also includes one or two pictures of Strathaven itself. Some communities centred around a mill or a bridge, others grew when stations were opened on the railway line from Strathaven to Darvel, while Drumclog's claim to fame centres on the skirmish between Covenanters and government troops that took place there.
